🌿 Sunday Reflections 🌿
I had the honor of screening, The Invitation with Healing Circle Grief Recovery, a grief group. 💬 It sparked a conversation we don’t have nearly enough: grieving the self while still alive.

Grief isn’t always about losing someone. For those living with autoimmune disease or chronic illness, pieces of your identity, energy, or “ableness” can slip away—again and again. It’s a different kind of loss, one that asks you to continually accept what’s changing while holding space for what still remains.

I used to hide my pain, thinking vulnerability was weakness.

When I say I put pressure on myself, I mean it. No one asked me to drive to Virginia or Massachusetts to capture these stories—I chose to. Because they mattered. Because we matter.

And yet, every mile, every moment filming while managing my own autoimmune challenges, reminded me why this documentary had to exist.

What a weekend! Each deserving of its own post. Today, I had the pleasure of attending the screening of a powerful documentary I also was blessed participate in, Black Female Therapist by Dr. Jenine Lowery. Filled with vulnerability and resources from those of us working in the field, it highlights the importance of representation, having tools and a safe space to manage our mental health.

To my surprise, as the event got started, Dr. Jenine presented each of us with an award for the unique gifts we offer to the field. I am so grateful to have my work recognized by my peer and hopeful that Black Female Therapist will be another resource empowering the Black community and other POC to seek the help needed. There is no shame in reaching for help. It’s okay NOT to be ok 💚#BoldAndUnbreakable #femalesinfilm #mentalhealthawareness

First outing post surgery

Landed me at NJPAC with one of my favorite humans @behorne to see the incomparable Nikki Giovanni. Her poetry and social activism remain inspirational beyond words (pun intended). This was the second time I was blessed to see her and each time I’ve been able to walk away with a great personal story. This time fostered by my choice to wear a tie. My tie allowed me to become “part of the band.”

Quick take aways as I processed the day:
1. Authenticity will always make a way for profound exchanges.
2. Even as life life’s we can continue discovering ways to still move in our passion. See Ms. Giovanni revealed she is sick (lung cancer) and as a fellow immunocompromised person, while I am saddened by the news. I was inspired by her anew as I witnessed her acceptance of it, take what she needed while on stage and thrive anyway.
3. Friendship is a true gift and those that transcend years and seasons are truly priceless. Ms. Giovanni shared musings with us, in the company of phenomenal musicians she has known for years and greatly respects, Javon Jackson and Christian McBride. The respect, laughter and love was evident, infectious and reciprocal. It made me even more grateful for the invitation from my Soul Sister Barbara Horne as we witnessed a masterclass of sorts on so many levels, as we shared food, laughter, sisterhood and a timeless memory. #nikkigiovanni #votingmatters #friendship

This past July I found myself in an unexpected transition. First, I was shocked, taken totally off guard and as if I was given no choice in the situation. Then I “prescribed” myself what I had many times before asked of my clients, I went to a rage room. At the end of the 20 minutes I found myself incredibly clear, calm, and exhausted as I realized I was not angry as much as I was disappointed. Anger is a default emotion often masking the deeper feeling(s). Even more surprising than getting clarity on the situation that brought me there was realizing I was feeing deep grief. See, up until that point I had never given myself room to feel what the having an autoimmune disease has meant for my life? Sure, I’d done everything to stabilize my RA and mood as stress makes everything worse. Yet realized I went straight into “coping,” makes sense especially being a therapist. But even in using coping tools we must make room to authentically and fully feel the situation or transformative event. All are steps toward healing.

So on this World Mental Health Day 💚 I encourage you to feel the totality of what is coming up for you. Only by going through the storm can we get to the other side.

TBT: This past Spring my nephew had his party at Iron Peak Sports and Events, the go to place for all things rock climbing to American Ninja😳 while the parents cheered our children scaled walls, leaped off towers as if they were members of The Avengers. Feeling bold, I decided to give it a try. The rock walls were a no go, as I slid down like old school slips on a Sunday morning. I tried climbing the ropes also, again without success. Then I saw these green towers, simple enough, right? No wrong. As I went forth the reality of the height became clear. At times I was trembling with fear but I kept going any way. It helped to have my hubby, son and others rooting for me every step of the way. One’s tribe is important and can greatly affect outcomes 🧑‍🧑‍🧒

I have a saying, “Move forward even if your knees are shaking.” Every move we make will not be comfortable, it is not suppose to be. It is our “comfort zones” that kept us most stagnant from growing. Failure is not fatal, it just requires us to regroup and find the right path for us. By the way, I made it to the top and was able to jump off.

I have a saying, “Move forward even if your knees are shaking.” Every move we make will not be comfortable, it is not suppose to be. It is our “comfort zones” that kept us most stagnant from growing. Failure is not fatal, it just requires us to regroup and find the right path for us. By the way, I made it to the top and was able to jump off.

Lessons from filmmaking: Not only as a filmmaker but in life in general, it is important to be prepared for the unexpected. In each of the narrative productions I have produced, it has been necessary to step into a role beyond writer, excuse me director or producer. In Black Cases (2021) my lead actress caught Covid and while healed in time for shooting was uncomfortable chancing getting it again. Totally understandable given all we did not know at the time about Covid. In For Eternity (never released) I served as the body double in the funeral scene.

While we cannot always anticipate what life will throw at us, it is important to remain level headed and prepared to do what is necessary to achieve the best outcome possible.

When going into new experiences I’ve found being “open” to be best for me. I tend not to fill up with expectations before hand. This is beneficial for a number of reasons.

Tamara - That was my first challenge. Coming from a fictional film like Black Cases, I had no idea where to start with The Invitation. But life has a way of guiding us—Scribe became my “how to.” 📖

What made this journey even more intense was not just my own battle with autoimmune disease, but filming the stories of women who were facing their own. Some weren’t doing well, and that pressure weighed on me—what if this documentary became the last thing their children ever saw? 😔

I knew I had to get it done, but in a way that would leave something for our children to understand, to feel. That’s what kept me going.

Autoimmune diseases are tough, but these stories are tougher. You can watch our journey unfold in The Invitation. 💪
